What is an Imperative? امر چیست؟
An imperative is a sentence that tells someone to do (or not to do) something. We use it for orders, instructions, advice, invitations, warnings and requests.
جملهی امر (Imperative) جملهای است که در آن به کسی میگوییم کاری را انجام بده یا انجام نده. از آن برای دستور، راهنمایی، نصیحت، دعوت، هشدار و درخواست استفاده میکنیم.
3 golden features of an imperative:
① No subject – we don't say “you”. ② The base form of the verb (no to, no -s, no -ed). ③ It speaks to “you” – one person or many.
سه ویژگی طلایی: ① فاعل ندارد (نمیگوییم you). ② از شکل سادهی فعل استفاده میکند (بدون to، بدون s، بدون ed). ③ همیشه مخاطبش «تو» یا «شما» است؛ یک نفر یا چند نفر.
Statement vs. Imperative جملهی خبری در برابر امر
| Statement (خبری) | Imperative (امر) | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| You open the door. | Open the door. | در را باز کن. |
| You are quiet. | Be quiet. | ساکت باش. |
| You don't run. | Don't run. | نَدو. |
| You sit down. | Sit down. | بنشین. |
What do we use imperatives for? امر را برای چه کاری به کار میبریم؟
| Function | Example | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| Order · دستور | Stop! Be quiet! | ایست! ساکت باش! |
| Instruction · راهنمایی | Turn left at the corner. | سر گوشه به چپ بپیچ. |
| Advice · نصیحت | Drink more water. | آب بیشتری بنوش. |
| Invitation · دعوت | Come in and sit down. | بیا تو و بنشین. |
| Warning · هشدار | Watch out! Mind the step. | مراقب باش! مراقب پله باش. |
| Request · درخواست | Please help me. | لطفاً به من کمک کن. |
| Offer · تعارف | Have some tea. Help yourself. | کمی چای بخور. بفرما. |
| Good wishes · آرزو | Have a nice day. Enjoy your trip. | روز خوبی داشته باشی. سفر خوش. |
Imperatives end with a full stop (.) or an exclamation mark (!) when the feeling is strong: Stop! Please sit down.
جملهی امر با نقطه یا با علامت تعجب در پایان میآید؛ وقتی احساس یا فشار زیاد است از ! استفاده میکنیم.
Affirmative Imperatives امر مثبت
Use the base form of the verb. It is the same for one person or many people, for a friend or a teacher, for a man or a woman.
از شکل سادهی فعل استفاده کن. فرقی نمیکند یک نفر را مخاطب قرار دهی یا چند نفر را؛ دوست باشد یا معلم؛ مرد یا زن. در انگلیسی فقط یک شکل وجود دارد.
In Persian we say بنشین (to one person) and بنشینید (to many / politely). In English both are just Sit down.
در فارسی امر معمولاً با «ب» شروع میشود (بنشین، برو، بخور) و برای «شما» «ـید» میگیرد. در انگلیسی هیچ پیشوند و پسوندی نداریم! فقط فعل ساده.
Sentence patterns ساختارهای جمله
| Pattern | Example | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | Stop! Wait! Come! | ایست! صبر کن! بیا! |
| Verb + object | Open the window. | پنجره را باز کن. |
| Verb + adverb | Speak slowly. | آهسته صحبت کن. |
| Verb + place | Come here. Go home. | بیا اینجا. برو خانه. |
| Verb + object + place | Put your bag on the chair. | کیفت را روی صندلی بگذار. |
| Be + adjective | Be quiet. Be careful. | ساکت باش. مراقب باش. |
Classroom verbs you must know فعلهای امر کلاسی
✘ To open the door. ✔ Open the door.
✘ Opens the door. ✔ Open the door.
✘ Are quiet. ✔ Be quiet.
بعد از امر نه to میآید و نه s. برای «باش» از Be استفاده کن، نه Are یا Is.
Negative Imperatives امر منفی
To tell someone not to do something, put Don't before the base verb.
برای اینکه به کسی بگویی کاری را نکن، قبل از فعل ساده Don't میگذاری. در فارسی با «ن» منفی میکنیم؛ در انگلیسی با Don't.
| Form | When we use it | Example | فارسی |
|---|---|---|---|
| Don't + verb | everyday, spoken | Don't run in the hall. | توی راهرو نَدو. |
| Do not + verb | formal, written, signs | Do not enter. | وارد نشوید. |
| Never + verb | very strong · always | Never give up. | هرگز تسلیم نشو. |
| Don't be + adjective | with the verb be | Don't be late. | دیر نکن. |
More examples مثالهای بیشتر
With be we always say Don't be … (not “Be not”).
برای فعل be همیشه Don't be میگوییم؛ مثلاً Don't be late، نه Be not late.
To be polite: Please don't park here. / Don't park here, please.
برای مؤدب شدن: please را اول یا آخر جمله بگذار.
✘ Not run in the hall. ✔ Don't run in the hall.
✘ Don't to run. ✔ Don't run.
✘ Don't runs. ✔ Don't run.
✘ Don't late. ✔ Don't be late.
بعد از Don't همیشه فعل ساده میآید؛ نه to، نه s، نه ing. قبل از صفت باید be بیاوری.
Being Polite مؤدب بودن
An imperative can sound strong or rude. Adding please or using a softer structure makes it friendlier. Look at the “politeness ladder”:
جملهی امر گاهی محکم یا بیادبانه به نظر میرسد. اضافه کردن please یا استفاده از ساختارهای نرمتر آن را دوستانه میکند. این «نردبان ادب» را ببین:
Where does “please” go? please کجا میآید؟
Please close the door. / Close the door, please. (with a comma at the end)
please را یا اول جمله میگذاریم یا آخر جمله (با ویرگول). هرگز وسط فعل و مفعول نمیگذاریم.
✘ Close please the door. ✔ Please close the door.
Other softeners کلمات نرمکننده
| Word | Example | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| just | Just wait here a moment. | فقط یک لحظه اینجا صبر کن. |
| do | Do have some tea. | حتماً کمی چای بخور. (تعارف) |
| kindly | Kindly wait outside. (formal) | لطفاً بیرون منتظر بمانید. (رسمی) |
When is a plain imperative OK? With friends and family, in recipes and instructions, in emergencies, and on signs. With strangers, your boss or customers, use please or Could you…?
امر ساده در این موارد اشکالی ندارد: با دوستان و خانواده، در دستور پخت و راهنما، در شرایط اضطراری و روی تابلوها. با غریبهها، مدیر یا مشتری از please یا Could you…? استفاده کن.
Tone matters: a friendly, rising voice sounds kind; a low, falling voice sounds like a strict order.
لحن هم مهم است: صدای ملایم و رو به بالا مهربان است؛ صدای محکم و رو به پایین مثل دستور جدی است.
Names, Subjects & Emphasis نام مخاطب، فاعل و تأکید
Normally an imperative has no subject. But sometimes we add a name, a word like somebody, or do to make the meaning clear or stronger.
معمولاً امر فاعل ندارد؛ اما گاهی برای روشنتر یا قویتر شدن معنا، نام مخاطب، کلماتی مثل somebody یا do اضافه میکنیم.
| Pattern | Example | فارسی |
|---|---|---|
| Name (comma!) | Sara, close the door. / Close the door, Sara. | سارا، در را ببند. |
| You (contrast) | You wait here. I'll go. | تو اینجا صبر کن. من میروم. |
| Somebody | Somebody call an ambulance! | یک نفر به اورژانس زنگ بزند! |
| Everybody | Everybody listen, please. | همه گوش کنید، لطفاً. |
| Nobody | Nobody move! | هیچکس تکان نخورد! |
| Do (emphatic) | Do come in! Do be careful! | حتماً بیا تو! حتماً مراقب باش! |
| Don't you… (angry) | Don't you dare touch it! | جرئت نکنی به آن دست بزنی! |
After somebody / everybody / nobody use the base verb: Somebody call (not calls) a doctor!
بعد از somebody، everybody و nobody هم فعل ساده میآید؛ نه فعل با s.
Do + verb is friendly and warm when inviting: Do sit down! In a warning it is strong: Do be careful!
do تأکیدی در دعوت مهربانانه است و در هشدار جدی و قوی.
You don't go. is a statement. Don't you go! is a strong command.
دقت کن: You don't go. جملهی خبری است. Don't you go! امر محکم است.
Let's and Let + Person پیشنهاد و اجازه
A · Let's = “Let us” (suggestion) الف) پیشنهاد دادن با Let's
Answers: Yes, let's. / Great idea! / No, let's not.
جوابها: Yes, let's. یعنی «بله، بیا». No, let's not. یعنی «نه، نکنیم».
Let's includes me: it means “we should”. But Let us go! can mean “allow us to leave / free us!” – it is a different meaning.
Let's یعنی «ما (من هم) بیاییم...». اما Let us go! گاهی یعنی «ما را رها کنید / اجازه بدهید برویم» و معنایش فرق دارد.
B · Let + person + verb (permission / order) ب) اجازه یا دستور با Let
✘ Let's to go. ✔ Let's go.
✘ Let's going. ✔ Let's go.
✘ Let's not to go. ✔ Let's not go.
✘ Let me to help you. ✔ Let me help you.
بعد از Let's و Let me/him/them فعل ساده میآید؛ بدون to و بدون ing.

Phrasal verbs (verb + particle) فعلهای عبارتی
With separable phrasal verbs the object can go in the middle. If the object is a pronoun (it, them, him…), it must go in the middle.
در فعلهای عبارتی جداشدنی مفعول میتواند وسط بیاید. اگر مفعول ضمیر (it، them، him…) باشد، حتماً وسط میآید.
